| Stitching is a magic spell. You are drawing energy through the fabric with your needle. You can speak a wish as you sew. A circle represents wholeness, completeness, this big, round world. It is a nice shape to wrap your dreams and wishes into! |
::YOU WILL NEED::
A piece of fabric, big enough to cut your
circle from;? Heavy Thread, such as crochetor embroidery thread, or even kite string.
Scissors
A Needle with a large eye to get the string through If you use new fabric, pick a color that resonates with what you are doing in this charm. If you wish, use a piece of one of your own garments- a shirt that means a lot to you but is about to be thrown away. If you are making a charm for a close friend, use a piece of her clothing, or share a piece of yours. You might also want to use something from a family member. For instance, your father's or mother's clothing might wrap a protection charm.
Find something you can lay onto your fabric to draw your circle. Your amulet will end up to be a bit less than HALF the size of your circle. A six-inch circle makes a pouch that will carry most items in a cozy way. When you cut it out, you can say a little spell;
Scissors of Steel, Scissors of Steel Cut the threads that bind us to all past sorrows concealed so we may leave it all behind us Fold the edge of the fabric from the Right side to the inside. You may want to iron this so it stays flat, or you may find you can hold it down with your thumb as you sew. Thread a needle with a long piece of heavy thread. Pull the thread through the eye so that it is the same length on each end. Don't knot the ends, but leave them loose! |
Using a running stitch, sew around the circle. Stop when you are half way around. Cut the thread to take the needle off, so that you have two threads hanging loose. Thread the needle again, and sew the bottom half way around, cutting the thread once again. You will have four threads hanging loose, in two places, on your circle of fabric. Pick up two threads on one side- be sure you have one from the top half and one from the bottom half and knot them together. tug gently on the four from the other side, to find out which ones have been knotted. Take the two threads that are still free, and knot them together on that
side. The free ends on each side are your drawstrings. You may string a few beads onto them if you wish, before you tie them- pull both pairs at the same time, and your flat circle will magically pull into a little round bundle! |
| There are no rules about what you put into your pouch. But you might want to include some things that represent the four elements. You might find a feather for air, a pebble for earth, a stick of wood for fire, a seashell for water. These can be very small, to fit into the bag!
I like to add something that means home and happiness, it depends on the person for that. You might put a little paper with a prayer, and something that smells good, like Rosemary herb or a tiny drop of perfume on cotton. For young girls, I like to put rose petals or a dried whole rosebud, if I can; The rose protects women.
Then, you might want to include something to help the person with what they are doing in like. For an artist, I put a tiny paintbrush (I cut a cheap paintbrush short) for a soldier, I made a tiny shield out of copper to protect him. For a new mother, I put some of her hair and the baby's mixed together. For a man beginning a new business, I put a dime coin into his bag.
A little salt might be good, too, for protection. you can put it into the corner of a plastic bag, or simply pour it into the bag around the other ingredients.
Those are my suggestions. But what you put in is up to you. |
